nyc

My wife LOVES NYC. She was there last Spring to see Oprah. She's beside herself right now because we're going there in June for our 5th anniversary! In celebration of this event I'm going to tell her about this very blog, one year from the day I started it.

She'll be extremely embarrassed I'm sure, but I've kept it anonymous, so hopefully not to the point where I have to take it down at that point.

In any case, we're both super excited for the trip. She's sent me this video to my email like three times in the last two weeks:

summer wedding shower

While I was digging through the archives, I felt I had to pull these photos out as well- partly because the thought of summertime is amazing to me right now. I NEED it to start warming up soon!

Anyway, my wife and her mom hosted a wedding shower for a family member last summer at my in-laws' farm. I had helped them set up the tables and chairs, taking specific orders on placement and position. I was impressed by how it turned out though, as I had only ever seen such a sight in magazines.

For drinks they served spiked lemonade in mason jars I guess. Even grandma was having a good time. That girl of mine and her mama can sure throw a party.

hoppy easter

Good morning crazy fluffy Easter chick.

I'm reminded of the two baby chicks I gave to my wife for Easter ... four years ago...? Wow, time flies. Plugging in my external hard drive to dig back into the archives, I found the photos! They were fun little buggers. They of course lived at her parents', not in our apartment.

While poking around in the archives, I found a few more Springtime critters from years past. A couple of years ago I told my in-laws they should get some sheep for Easter, and my wish came true!

And this kitty, taking its first steps out from the safety of its box last year. Spring is my favorite season!

asparagus hash

I'll go ahead and assume we needed to use up the asparagus that we used for the pizza last week. A very savory brunch dish, this particular asparagus hash my wife made comprised of fried sweet potatoes, bacon and asparagus topped with a fried egg. I was naughty, and poured myself a shallow glass of merlot leftover from the bottle we cracked yesterday. I just don't see why a guy can't have a little vino at 10am. In any case, I'd highly recommend this dish from Smitten Kitchen.

'very' good friday

It has been a few months since we gorged ourselves with a simple delectable meat/cheese/fruit tray. Since today was a holiday, we decided we were due. It is AMAZING to me how the different combinations of tomatoes, cheeses (brie, cheddar, mozzarella), Nutella, raspberry jam, strawberries, prosciutto, salami, bread and crackers can bring to life so many taste buds, especially washed down with some mid-day merlot. Both my wife and I think we found a favorite combination however- the brie cheese and raspberry jam compliment each other so well spread on a hunk of bread. I almost couldn't stop, seriously.

asparagus pizza

My mouth was very surprised by the taste, but it shouldn't have been as it pretty much tasted like asparagus combined with cheese pizza. Asparagus pizza! Who knew?! Smitten Kitchen apparently. My wife asked if I would want to have this again for dinner. "Definitely," I said.

She sprinkled Feta on hers and really liked it. I'm a Feta-less guy myself I guess.

good life

"This is when you know you have a good life- when you get to have pretty flowers on your table like this." This was a direct quote from my wife this week, as she admired the Ranunculus flowers our our little dining table. These are her second-favorite flower, after Peonies. Her bouquet at our wedding was of Peonies, but she had to remind me that the Ranunculus was what I had pinned to my tux.

I also learned that third-favorite on her list are Hydrangeas, and fourth are Tulips. (I always knew these were all her favorites, but didn't know there was a specific order)

the french way

Our apartment is starting to develop a delicious aroma as I write this. I ask my wife what is starting to smell so good. She says "I'm making soup, will you go give it a stir for me?" I go stir the pot of full of onions, and when I come back to the living room she says "I'm making French Onion Soup, the French way." I say, "What is 'the French way'?" She replies simply, "Slow."

I do some poking around, and can safely assume it's a Julia Child recipe found via Smitten Kitchen (starting to wonder what we would do without this Smitten lady).

I know it'll be worth the wait. Good thing I have some leftover spaghetti from Friday to hold me over.

I'll have to stay out of the kitchen for awhile though, as my eyes water easily from the onions and my wife will make fun of me.

pull-apart cinnamon bread

Fantastic. Spread butter, peel off the slice, eat, repeat. My wife says she likes this cinnamon bread format better than cinnamon 'rolls.' I'd say I agree. A delicious recipe from Joy. It probably tastes extra good this morning- comfort food, as it's April 16th, and looking out the window this morning there is a light dusting of snow on the cars parked in the street. Ughhh!!!

crispy broccoli

We like to roast our vegetables around here. As a side to a delicious spaghetti dinner, my wife served up roasted broccoli. However, she 'over-roasted' them a bit, and they were very... interesting. Hard to explain the texture/taste, but it was sort of like eating ashes but with decent flavor actually!

take me out

Today we both took the day off to take advantage of some free tickets to see a Twins ballgame! My wife hadn't been to the new stadium yet, so it was a fun time, but "baseball watching" really isn't her thing she says. However, we were up in the nose-bleeds, and she said she thinks she could've been able to pay more attention to the game if we were a little closer to the players. Yeah right.

puffed pancakes

Never heard of them. But that's nothing new. They taste just like they sound, like a puffed up pancake, very light and fluffy. "Garnished with fruit and syrup" as suggested they are a simple fun change of pace for breakfast. If you want to try making them yourself, from the aftermath in the kitchen it looks like she poured her batter into ramekins, if that helps, but I'm guessing the batter isn't the same as you'd use for regular pancakes.

whoopie pies

Let's see, it's Sunday, what treat might I be having today? Whoopie Pies! My wife whipped up the 'original' style of these pies from a recipe in the whoopie pies book she picked up at the library this week. To me they (I had three) tasted much like a Hostess snack cake (HoHos or DingDongs?). Perfect with a cup of coffee.
