peppers and oj

I came home to this random assortment sitting on the prep table, and had to ask "what are we having for dinner that involves pork sausage, peppers, orange juice, eggs and onions?"

Breakfast burritos! With "citrus squeeze smoothies" to drink of course. The smoothies were made from a frozen banana, yogurt, honey, lemon juice in addition to the orange juice- not from any of the other stuff in that picture...

jam and cheese pastry

My weekend couldn't be starting out any better. Last night my wife and I went cross-country skiing in the nature preserve nearby, and the lighted trails provided for a gorgeous ski through the woods.

Not used to such exercise that late in the evening, we slept in this morning. I'm sipping my cup of coffee, reading the news via the Internet (mostly of the developments in Cairo) and my wife is baking cream cheese and raspberry jam pastries- the kind I always buy from bakeries if I ever see them. The Bonne Maman jam she used is simple and delicious.

happy bday!

My mom said she'd never in her whole life had such a pretty cake. Look at all the colors!

loving daughter-in-law

My wife and I are having my family over for dinner tomorrow to celebrate my mom's birthday. I've been assisting my wife in the kitchen for the last four hours as she's been preparing a bolognese sauce for a lasagna main course and a super fun birthday cake for dessert. I made one of my favorite appetizers, asparagus wrapped with cream cheese and prosciutto.

But, the cake takes .. the cake. Eight layers of different colors, all made using just two 6" cake pans. (quite a slow process) And white chocolate frosting tops it all off.

Once again
, my wife puts more time and effort into making a fun event than anyone I know.

We had to laugh though because we had to remove a shelf from our fridge because it's so tall!

cookies whenever

My wife made cookies (soft gingery ones) last night at 9:30pm just because she felt like it. I didn't stop her.

My wife said she'd make us some hot chocolate last night. Of course that didn't mean from the store-bought packets. She made "Peanut Butter and Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa" with homemade whip cream topping from a recipe in Living magazine. Martha Stewart sure knows how to make a good hot cocoa. Three words came out of my wife's mouth when she took the first sip, "that is sinful."

It tasted much like liquefied Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, amazingly rich, but so good. The shot of Kahlua in mine tasted extra good.

saturday sandwich and soup

After a late shower on this lazy Saturday, I could smell that my wife was up to something in the kitchen again. She was making cream of tomato soup, from Smitten Kitchen's recipe and was requesting that I make the grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Now, I don't like to brag, but I make the best grilled cheese sandwiches ever. I developed the perfect process during my years of college and bachelor life.

There's nothing quite like soup and sandwich for an early lunch on a weekend when the sun is shining bright but the temperature outside is frightfully cold.

happy new year

So far 2011 is tasting fantastic. My wife wrote up the menu above our stove for dinner tonight, and it was as good as it reads. I don't know how a person makes butterscotch pudding, but I like it. Here's to a great year ahead. Happy New Year everyone!
