loving daughter

For my wife's mom's birthday party on Sunday she not only made a delicious cake decorated like I've never seen, but also a batch of fleur de sel caramels (from the baked cookbook) as part of her birthday present. If anyone is more impressed with my wife's creations and baking ability than I am, it's her mother. She was so excited and had a wonderful birthday thanks to the time and energy my wife put into it.

All the tastes

For dinner this evening we came up with a smörgåsbord of bite-sized eats to sample. Prosciutto and melon, baguette with brie cheese and an orange/cranberry/vodka fruit spread, Triscuits with Nutella and sea salt. A taste sensation.

My wife tells me she's glad I'm not a steak and potatoes kind of guy. I definitely enjoy a good steak and potato, but to limit my taste buds to just that would be a shame.

White Friday

Post-Thanksgiving, instead of crazy Black Friday shopping shenanigans, we typically stay in our warm apartment and decorate for Christmas- something I'm thankful for. We have a white tree that we've put up the last few years. We're ready for a change, but at the same time this might be our last Christmas in our apartment (we plan to build a house next year) so we decorated it with love. After assembling it, my wife takes to adding lights, lots of lights. What we do change up each year is the variety of ornaments on the tree. This year, a simple mixture of colorful new and antique balls. Tis the season once again.

Happy Thanksgiving

Heading out the door to ma and pa's house for Turkey Day, I told my wife I needed to snap a quick picture of her with her baked good. Too bad the saran wrap was already covering it- the pie was delicious looking. And delicious it was of course. I'm not sure if I've ever tried pecan pie before, but as long as my wife makes them I'll be eating them from now on. Everyone at dinner said it was the best pecan pie they'd ever had. Of course my wife responded with "anyone could do it, you just have to follow the recipe." This one came from The Pioneer Woman, and it's a good one.

breakfast for dinner

We both love breakfast food, even if it's dinnertime. My wife prepared for us this elegant meal of waffles (her favorite), bacon and eggs last night. It reminds me of our favorite place to get a good hearty breakfast in our old college town- a hole-in-the-wall cafe called Uncle Louis.

pb and chocolate pillows

So I thought I'd try and impress my wife by baking a treat for us myself. I knew that Joy the Baker was a good option, as my wife had made deliciousness from her recipes in the past.

I happened across these little guys, and thought I'd give them a whirl. (I LOVE peanut butter and chocolate) They looked simple enough, how could I go wrong?

Well they turned out OK. (but if you compare my pictures to hers you'll just laugh at me) I dolloped too much peanut butter on the squares, thus preventing me from making a clean crimp around the edges. And it also limited the amount of chocolate I could put in the pillow as well. More chocolate and less peanut butter next time would be better (if I had read the recipe more closely, it would've been a non-issue)

Upon pulling them out of the oven and taking a bite, my wife said "mmm, these are so good." However, the next day she truthfully told me "yeah, maybe a bit too much pb. kinda tasted like I was eating a big wad of peanut butter."

She always gives it to me straight, even if it's delayed.

die hard football fan

My wife's youngest brother is a senior on our old high school's football team this year. They're a great team, and even made it to the state tournament! For their first playoff game, the wind was so strong, the air so cold, and the rain so harsh, that we could barely keep our eyes open to watch the game. But it was playoffs and any game might've been his last, so we bundled up and braved the elements. Check out my wife's garb! Her mom was there as well, and equally impressed with her outfit.

I suppose I could save this post for next Valentine's Day, but I'm sure my wife will have done something amazing for me to post about that day as well. Cleaning the closet this week, I pulled out the present my wife gave to me last Valentine's Day (her favorite holiday). "light of my life" is inscribed on the side, with little red wire hearts within the light bulb. Pretty dang adorable. She followed the directions from design sponge. If it looks like there's a bit too much glue around the base of the bulb, it's because I bumped it loose once and tried using the hot glue gun myself, but not nearly as elegantly as my wife did originally.

Paris photos

As I've mentioned, my wife enjoys tweaking her photos in Photoshop. She finished our photos of Paris just this week. They look amazing, and as usual there are so many that I'm sure we'll fill an entire album. Here's a few, including several of the Eiffel of course. It's impossible not to photograph.
